Why This Blog Exists

🤔 What’s the Problem?

Most teens leave high school knowing how to solve a quadratic equation—but not how to file taxes, avoid debt, or apply for a scholarship. That’s a serious problem.

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), most American adults say they have financial anxiety and lack basic money skills. High schoolers are just a few years away from managing rent, student loans, credit cards, and jobs—but only 27 states require personal finance courses in high school. The worst part is that most of the stuff you learn in the states that have those classes isn't practical and doesn't cover essential topics related to high schoolers like student loans and scholorships.

🔍 Why It Matters Right Now

There’s a growing demand among students for financial education. Many of us want to understand:

  • How interest and loans really work
  • How to avoid scams
  • How to plan for emergencies or college
  • What scholarships or financial opportunities exist

Here’s what the research says:

  • People with higher financial literacy are more likely to spend less than they earn and have emergency savings.
  • Only 29% of Americans say they took a personal finance course in high school.
  • The average American scores just 46% on a financial literacy quiz.
  • States that have implemented these courses are seeing real benefits—but many are still behind.

Still, there are critics. Some say that even when people know what to do, they still make bad choices. Others say schools are already overwhelmed. As one article puts it, “Schools have been asked to solve every societal issue.”

But here's the truth: just because something is hard doesn’t mean we give up. Knowing the right tools and having the right mindset early can change lives. Just like a P.E. class doesn’t make you fit overnight, a finance class won’t make you rich—but it gives you the foundation.
